Founder and principal caretaker, Mary Sipe, shares how the idea for Abiding Love Companionship came about, and what motivates this important work.

The idea for ALC blossomed from a deeply personal experience.
After my mom passed in 2024, I found myself reflecting on the incredible love and support I received during the ten years I cared for her. There were so many moments—big and small—when friends and family stepped in: someone calling just to brighten her day, taking her to appointments, sitting with her to watch one of her favorite movies, flying with her to visit relatives, or staying with her so I could step away for a bit.
Founder and principal companion, Mary Sipe.
I truly couldn’t have done it alone. It was because of their kindness, time, and presence that I was able to keep her safe, comfortable, and surrounded by love. That experience showed me how powerful it is to simply show up for someone—and it’s the heart of why Abiding Love Companionship exists today.

But it wasn’t always easy. There were times when I couldn’t find someone to help—especially when I had to travel or needed consistent support. What made it even more difficult was finding someone who shared our values, someone who could see my mom the way I saw her: whole, spiritual, and perfect—no matter what the outward picture looked like.
While she had short stays at a few Christian Science facilities and we were grateful for the visiting Christian Science nurses who came by, she didn’t really need nursing care. What she needed was simpler, but just as important: someone to be with her. Someone who could sit beside her, talk with her, listen, laugh, and care. A true companion—one who understood her needs and could form a genuine, loving connection.
